How can we help?
Find answers to common questions about TallyTrip - planning trips, tracking expenses, and journaling your adventures.
Getting Started
Q: Is TallyTrip free to download?
A: Yes - TallyTrip is completely free to download and use. There are no ads, ever. We may introduce optional premium features in the future, but the core app will always be free.
Q: Can I use TallyTrip without creating an account?
A: Yes - tap "Continue without login" on the sign-in screen to explore TallyTrip as a guest. You can browse a demo trip to see how all the features work. To save your own trips and sync across devices, you'll need to create a free account.
Q: How do I create my first trip?
A: Tap "+ New Trip" in the top right corner of the dashboard. Enter your trip name, destination, and travel dates. You can optionally set a budget or skip it for now.
Q: Is TallyTrip available on iPhone and Android?
A: Yes - TallyTrip is available on both iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android. Download it from the App Store or Google Play. Your account and trips sync automatically across all your devices.
Q: How do I sign in with Google or Apple?
A: On the sign-in screen tap the Google or Apple icon under "Or continue with." You'll be prompted to authorize TallyTrip to use your account. We only receive your name and email - never your password.
Plan Tab
Q: How do I scan a booking confirmation?
A: Open your trip > Plan tab > Bookings section > tap "+" next to "Bookings". Upload a screenshot or PDF of your booking confirmation. TallyTrip will automatically read the flight details, hotel check-in dates, car rental information, and more.
Q: What types of bookings can I scan?
A: TallyTrip can scan four types of booking confirmations: Outbound flights, Inbound flights, Accommodation (hotels, Airbnb, etc.), and Rental cars. Take a clear screenshot of your confirmation email for the best results.
Q: How do I add activities to my itinerary?
A: Open your trip > Plan tab > Itinerary section. Tap the "+" button next to the day you want to add to. Fill in the activity title, date, time (or select "Anytime"), a short note, and an optional location powered by Google Places. You can also assign a tag - Maybe, Planned, or Booked.
Q: What do the Booked, Planned, and Wishlist tags mean?
A: The tags show how confirmed an activity is - they appear as a colored bar on the left side of each activity card:
- Booked - confirmed, reservation made
- Planned - decided but not yet booked
- Maybe - thinking about it, not decided yet
- No tag - untagged
Q: Can I reorder activities between days?
A: Yes - press and hold any activity card to drag and drop it to a different day. The target day will highlight to show you where it will land.
Q: How does the Trip Prep checklist work?
A: Trip Prep is your pre-departure to-do list - covering both things to pack and things to arrange before you leave. Open your trip > Plan tab > Trip Prep section. You can add your own items or tap "Use a template" to load a pre-built list for domestic or international travel. Tap any item to mark it as done.
Q: How do I navigate to an activity location?
A: If an activity has a location saved, tap the map pin icon on the activity card. This opens Google Maps with the exact location ready - no copying and pasting addresses needed.
Tally Tab
Q: How do I log an expense quickly?
A: Tap the Quick Log button at the bottom right of any screen. Enter the amount, select a category, and tap Save - done in 3 taps. For more detail (vendor, notes, payment method), tap "Add more details" before saving.
Q: How does receipt scanning work?
A: In the Log Expense form, tap the camera icon next to the amount field. Take a photo of your receipt or upload one from your library. TallyTrip will read the total amount, vendor name, and expense category automatically. Review the filled-in fields before saving - if anything couldn't be read clearly, that field will be left blank for you to fill in.
Q: Do I need to set a budget?
A: No - budget is completely optional. When creating a trip you can tap "Skip for now" to start tracking expenses without a budget target. You can always add a budget later in your trip settings. If no budget is set, the Tally tab simply shows your total spending without a progress bar.
Q: How do I split expenses with my travel companions?
A: In the Log Expense form, scroll to Optional Details and toggle on "Split with travelers." The expense will be marked as shared. You can see split expenses in your expense list with a group icon indicator.
Q: Can I track expenses in multiple currencies?
A: Yes - when logging an expense you can select the currency for that specific item. The currency is shown on each expense card in your list. Your base trip currency is set when you create the trip and can be changed in trip settings.
Q: What expense categories are available?
A: TallyTrip has eight expense categories: Lodging, Flight, Transport, Food & Drink, Tours & Activities, Shopping, Groceries, and Other. The Category Breakdown in the Tally tab shows how much you've spent in each category.
Journal Tab
Q: How do I write a journal entry?
A: Open your trip > Journal tab > tap "+ New Entry." Add a cover photo, write your entry title, write your story, add a location, and set the date. Tap "Save Draft" to save privately or "Publish Entry" to add it to your public journal (if sharing is enabled).
Q: Can I add multiple photos to a journal entry?
A: Yes - you can add multiple photos to any journal entry. One photo is designated as the cover photo (shown on the entry card in the list). All other photos appear in a gallery inside the full entry view when you tap to open it.
Q: How do I keep a journal entry private?
A: Each journal entry has a privacy toggle - set it to Private and it will only be visible to you. Private entries are never included in shared trip links, even if you've shared the trip with others.
Q: Can I save a draft and finish writing later?
A: Yes - tap "Save Draft" at any time while writing. Your entry is saved privately and you can come back to finish it whenever you're ready. Tap the entry card and then the edit button to continue writing.
Sharing Trips
Q: How do I share my trip with family and friends?
A: Tap the share icon on any trip card on your dashboard. TallyTrip generates a unique read-only link. Share it via message, email, or any app. Anyone with the link can view your trip itinerary, expenses, and journal entries in their browser - no app download required.
Q: Do my friends need to download TallyTrip to view my trip?
A: No - anyone with your share link can open it in any web browser on any device. They don't need to download TallyTrip or create an account. The shared view shows your Plan, Tally, and Journal in a clean, read-only format.
Q: Can people edit my trip through the share link?
A: No - shared links are strictly read-only. People with your link can view everything but cannot make any changes to your trip, add expenses, or write journal entries.
Q: How do I turn off sharing for a trip?
A: Go to your trip settings and tap "Turn off sharing." The link is immediately deactivated - anyone who tries to open it will see that the link is no longer active.
Q: Are my private journal entries included in the share link?
A: No - private journal entries are never included in shared links, regardless of your sharing settings. Only entries marked as Published are visible through the share link.
Account & Settings
Q: How do I reset my password?
A: On the sign-in screen tap "Forgot Password?" next to the password field. Enter your email address and we'll send you a password reset link. Check your spam folder if you don't see it within a few minutes.
Q: How do I change my profile photo?
A: Go to Settings > tap your profile row at the top. Tap your profile photo to select a new one from your photo library.
Q: How do I change my default currency?
A: Go to Settings > Currency and select your preferred default currency. This sets the default currency for new trips. You can also set a different currency per trip when creating or editing a trip.
Q: How do I send feedback or report a bug?
A: Go to Settings > Send Feedback. Type your message - a bug report, feature request, or anything on your mind. Your device type and app version are included automatically to help us investigate. We read every single message.
Q: How do I delete my account?
A: Go to Settings > Delete Account at the bottom of the page. You'll be asked to confirm. Deleting your account permanently removes all your trips, expenses, and journal entries within 30 days. This action cannot be undone.
Q: Where is my data stored?
A: Your data is stored securely using Google Firebase - an industry-standard cloud platform with encryption in transit and at rest. We never sell your data and we never show you ads. Read our Privacy Policy for full details.
